Been inspired by Bjork’s recent album project, Biophilia, she’s worked with an army of artists, designers and engineers to create 10 apps that link up with her new album where you explore a universe via song. It’s truly a feat of experimentation, she even got David Attenborough to record an intro for the app. She’s ace.

I've been humbled this month with an interview and feature in Now Then Magazine, a popular free publication based in the heart of Sheffield. They regularly feature artists as their main angle and they use up many pages with artwork from the featured artist, I've kept copies as collectables from certain artists features such as Nick Deakin and Lord Bunn in the past.

Copies of the magazine are free and can be found in most independent bars and boutiques around Sheffield!

Hey Sholay

Sheffield based band, Hey Sholay have been making waves in the local scene as well as winning a poll with the NME to win a gig slot at this years EXIT fest in Serbia. I'm a big fan of their music with their galloping drum beats and distorted guitars and catchy melodies. Listening to their music paints a picture in my head of how I'd approach their artwork, even though two members of the band look after the artwork which is very fine art touching on illustrative angles.

Here I wanted to play with my use of water colour textures and a bit of linear pencil drawing, I had a lot of fun working in this, just purely because it's been ages since I've worked on any personal work.

Tramlines Hantu Collective Merch 2011

Heres the the design I've submitted for this years Tramlines Festival merchandise, and I'm pretty happy with it. I wanted to capture the fun and explosive vibe that's in the city for that one summer weekend a year. I love Tramlines as it transforms the city and theres always good bands to watch.

I'm happy with this collaboration between Hantu Collective and Frooly, both Sheffield based creative businesses and hopefully we'll be able to work on next years festival merch... providing they go down well this year. Hint hint.

Janelle Monae Portrait

After a while I'd noticed I haven't worked on many of my own personal pieces, the recent months have had me tied down to more commercial work. Sometimes it's good to vent creatively and I normally have hundreds of ideas or images in my head that I want to put down onto paper or in this case, screen.

I'm a big fan of Janelle Monae, especially her performance and public persona and the conceptual image she's put across in her music and videos. I've always wanted to adapt her portrait into one of my stylised pieces so I had a bash.

I tweeted her and she even responded to my first draft, saying she liked it, which made my day. I'll be sure to watch her perform at Glastonbury this year which I cannot wait for.

Rolo Tomassi Hantu Collective Jumper

I've designed a new jumper print for the band Rolo Tomassi as some limited edition merchandise for the Hantu Collective. The brief was pretty simple, I was told that they like owls, so putting this together was easy to draw. I'm a big fan of the concentric circles because the owl here.

Wu-Tang vs. Jimi Hendrix Competition

On very short notice I entered a competition hosted by none other than The Wu-Tang Clan to design the new album cover for a mix done by Tom Caruana who's done a series of awesome hip hop mashups and mixes, most notably my personal favourite, Wu-Tang vs. The Beatles . The design brief is for the upcoming Wu-Tang vs. Jimi Hendrix. Instantly I knew I'd have to approach this project with my own take and style, and with a little help from some friends they directed me into using the iconic portrait of Jimi Hendrix . I also thought Purple Haze would have to play a part within the design too.

Eventually I managed to add more emphasis to the psychadelic patterns and purple smoke aswell as refine the faces of the original 9 member of the Wu. I thought putting RZA in the centre was a master stroke, as he is the main member of the clan. The font is one that Jimi Hendrix is known to have used on his previous albums and gig posters.

BUT sadly as of 24th May I found out that the design didn't make the cut, but if you're nosey enough you can see the design that did win the competition if you click here. Hopefully more opportunities like this will crop up in the future. Fingers crossed.

Sarah Mac Album Artwork

I'm still finding it hard to find a spare moment just so I can update my blog and keep things up to scratch. The past month I've been mainly working with local musicians in and around Sheffield. In particular, I've been a fan of Sarah Mac's blend of genre stroke pop song writing and instrumentals, she's even cooler and down to earth when you meet her in person so her music more or less fits well with her being.

I was asked by Liam at Mixed in Sheffield who's been mixing the album for Sarah, to produce some artwork for her new EP titled, Everyone Knows. Jumped at the chance, I instantly had an idea in my head, some might say slightly predictable and admitted the design concept was predictable on my part but I thought in context to what I know of Sarah Mac, it suits well.

GZA and My T-shirt

I'd been asked by Cow in Sheffield to put together a wall mural piece that takes up the stair case of the store. It was a cool project to work on mostly because they gave me full creative freedom to do what I wanted on their wall, but admittedly I stuck close to what I was comfortable with. This time I wanted to add more elements in the piece so you'd notice there are plenty of mini stories dotted around the wall space.

National Media Museum Faith Project

Church Pews: Faith

For the past 2 weeks I've been working on a commission by The National Media Museum in Bradford in conjunction with Freedom Studios. The exhibition is based on the theme of Faith and they'd asked me to illustrate loosely around famous locations and images related to Bradford. I'd spent a week researching the city and its famous landmarks as well as listening to recordings from the archives.

The studio managed to acquire a 200 year old oak church pew which they have chopped down into 6 individual seats that can sit 2 people, they even had to recreate the pew ends as closest to authenticity. I'd required them to coat them all in white emulsion (which I thought was sacrilegious to say the least but necessary) and then I allowed myself some time to plan head until I went straight in with marker pens.

The pews are stored in an abandoned mill, in the industrial quarter of Bradford, it's bloody cold in there and I'm constantly having to warm myself up by jumping around whilst listening to my ipod. I've found the best artists for this are Flying Lotus, Wu-Tang Clan and MF Doom. Lots of fun.

These will be on display at the museum by the end of the month and will be accompanied by a leather bound book which will have a miniature speaker inside playing a recording.

St. Thomas Primary

For 2 days I'd been working at St. Thomas Primary in Meadowhead, working alongside Year 2 and Year 3 pupils for their "Making History" Project. It was a very enthralling and engaging experience working with young enthusiastic children whom were very sweet and very bright.

The two mural pieces are interpretations of the children's input, where they would give me themes to draw or randomly find me in the day and suggest other things I should put into the murals. The looks on their faces at the end of each day was worth aching arms and back (my aching arms and back)

These pieces will be used in conjunction with a traveling caravan museum which the School will bring into the second phase of the "Making History" Project.

Stars in Stripes Launch Evening

A couple of nights ago was the launch of the first Stars in Stripes exhibition, and I can say it was a grand launch. I wouldn't want to go into the whole prepping and building of the show as it was a lot of hard graft but a rewarding experience when we saw scores of Sheffield folk making the trip to Rotherham to come see us and support us.

Through out the day there was plenty to do with cleaning and mounting the work and setting up the bar, but after a few bottled of ale, all that didn't seem to matter. I was really happy with the amount of work on show from all of the 12 artists and it really hit me to see how far we'd all come since creating the Stars in Stripes group. We've secured jobs from Sheffield City council and Fright Night as well decorating bars such as The Harley and The Wick at Both Ends, sometimes you forget about these things and how much work is involved.

A big thanks has to go Peter Martin who's had to put up with all of us artists, and he's become someone I consider as a good colleague at the end of it, I hope out of all of us he feels the most smug about how the show was pulled off. I wouldn't go so far to say it was a total Berlin vibe on the night but it really wasn't that far off, taking a step back and seeing skateboarders hurling themselves around the space doing tricks was a little far from the norm but created an independent vibe which I've never experienced before at an exhibition opening.

The Stars in Stripes Take Over Rotherham

Since the beginning of December 2010 I and the other illustrators of the Stars In Stripes have been busy drawing onto the windows a giant indoor space owned by the Open Minds Theatre group. Armed with paint rollers, emulsion and posca pens we've scrawled on all of the windows and gathered an extensive back catalogue of our live art work from the past 2 years ranging from Tramlines to the SOYO live art events.

We base ourselves as a Sheffield collective and we're very honoured to have been invited to Rotherham to show the city what we can do, our current Rotherham resident, Sarah Abbott has taken the lead and put her signature floral style to good use, linking all the work together with her linear and bold patterns.

We're curating our first group show under the Stars In Stripes banner in the centre of Rotherham for 2 weeks only and we're going to kick start it with an opening evening on Thursday 27th January where we'll be drawing on t-shirts, putting DJs on to spin some tracks and selling cupcakes, cakes and raffle tickets. I'm sure if I mention that there will be beverages and hot drinks it might perk some attention too.

Dead Young Records - Allo Darlin'

The boys from Leeds at Dead Young Records asked me to quickly knock up a gig poster for Allo Darlin' an intricate indie pop band from the US. I'm pleased with this design as photoshop is becoming more of a presence in my work for neat little effects.

PLUG - Jump Around Valentines Tattoos

For the Valentines Night at Plug, they've asked me to design some temporary tattoos for their traffic light party. The premise is that people put these tattoos on themselves to indicate if they're available, taken or a bit curious.

Covert Sound System

As some of you may know I've been working on the Covert Soundsystem promotion material over the past year. Covert is an electronic music night held at Plug night club every Friday night here in Sheffield, as the popularity has grown so has the artwork, the owners wanted the artwork to evolve and become collectible. Heres the design for the front of the new February flyer run.

Berlin, Baby!

Just got back from a trip to Berlin, I'd managed to wrangle my way into the international fashion tradeshow, Bread and Butter to have a gander at the new autumn and winter collection of clothing from brands such as Supreme Being, Lacoste, Fred Perry, Penfield, Your Eyes Lie, you name them they were all there. I went along to Germany with my buddies, urban culture blogger Thomas Pham and modern day couture artiste, Ceri who also enjoyed a trip of sight seeing and boutique hunting.

I was well impressed with amount of free goodies on offer from the Threadless stall, namely some nice badges and their own brand of notebook! I sadly missed out on meeting the artist Simone Legno who works on the Italian Tokidoki range as he was also present at the trade show but with so many stalls to see and so many people to talk to, the 2 days we were at the show just became a big blur, a tiring one at that.

Getting out of the country does something good for the soul and feeds into the imagination, whilst away I was doodling a lot and preparing myself for some big work I will be conducting for a new venue in Sheffield and some London offices in Kings Cross. These projects I will elaborate later in some future blog posts. Heres a little sketch to show you what will be coming up.

Over the Christmas holiday period I always find that relaxing gives me more time for thought and ideas. It's normally the best time for me to get onto creative stuff and my head has been buzzing.

This little illustration has been brewing for some months now and I'd started drawing her a while back, just couldn't figure out how to finish it off. Finally before New Years Eve, I've managed to add the finishing touches to what will be a new Hantu T-shirt design.

Window Dressing In Rotherham

For the past month I've been working with the Stars in Stripes group to decorate a space in the center of Rotherham. It's been a bit of a hectic month with the baltic weather and adverse snowy conditions, that coupled with hassle on the train line, other than that we've worked hard and covered many windows in a space that spans 6000 square meters.

The project has come from ROAR (Rotherham Open Arts Renaissance) who initially asked us to decorate on the windows with our illustration work. Peter Martin who has been our correspondent in turn has also given us the opportunity to curate our first group show in January for a duration of a couple of weeks, something which is a huge task but surely achieveable.

Drawing on the window spaces has required the use of acrylic paints, emulsion and Posca pens which have helped out a lot. If you want to see the full report, click here.

Ninja Cat

I've recently repainted a smaller mural in the Hantu Workshop this month and chanced upon an inspiring idea. I want to draw ninjas and samurais again just like when I was back in college and university. I've managed to create my first character, who I will simply name Ninja Cat for now.

Here's another attempt at my new feline character during live art at Kool Beans, a night that was held at the Bowery. I've been looking for new approaches to work on for the new year as I have a solo show in the Forum around February time. Ideas have now popped into my head and I guess I'll keep them to myself until I get to work on them...

An old coursemate of mine, James Horwitz has been running his own Graphic Design company in the heart of London for the past year and a bit, 2X Elliot is building up a decent client list and they're moving to a swanky new studio space situated in Notting Hill, not too shabby me thinks.

James asked me to knock something up quickly to display on their website, an illustration that had to reflect 2X Elliot, I admittedly copped out and just doodled away as time restraint was against me but I'm pleased with this.

Fright Night: Halloween At The Crucible

For Halloween, Sheffield city centre was engulfed in Fright Night, an event organised byYellowbus Events and has grown in stature over the past few years to turn Sheffield into a Halloween themed carnival. Scott Barton of Yellowbus Events asked me to organise the live art side of things to set some artistic ambience in the Crucible Theatre, naturally I gathered the Stars In Stripes to take on some Halloween themed artwork.

This was a very pleasant event to work on even if there were hired zombies stumbling around trying to scare you every 5 minutes, on many occasions making kids cry. It was pretty cool and we were looked after by the staff which we were all thankful for especially as our collective hangovers were kicking in from a weekend of Halloween partying.

We all drew various monsters on our 6ft boards, I'd chosen to take on a werewolf as it's been the one thing I've enjoyed drawing over the past month. I think I'll start to work with more colour with my live art work from now on as I've noticed it adds a lot more to the piece as a whole.

TOMS Blog

I've been put up on the TOMS blog as follow up for the Style Your Sole event which was held in The Office store in Meadowhall.

This involved me doodling on brand new pairs of TOMS shoes for customers who purchased in store for that day. It was a pretty lively event with Kopperberg cider being handed out to shoppers whilst browsing for footwear. TOMS are pretty unique as they have a good stance on an ethical business model that gives pairs of shoes to children who are in need of them, from what I can tell they're quite popular in the U.S where they originate from, I hope that in the U.K people will latch onto this as a popular brand.

Snapped Up

Yesterday I was snapped by photographer Sam Wright, for an article with S1 Magazine, they'd interviewed me and filmed it a couple a months ago. For their article they lacked a decent photograph of me so they decided to shoot some pics in the Hantu Workshop.

I'm very impressed with Sam's use of lighting and his understanding of his rig. I think I'll print one of these out, frame it and give it to my mum for Christmas, maybe she'll be proud of me... I hope :)

A Busy Week And It's Not Over Yet...

So this week I've been involved with the temporary Hantu Collective Pop Up stall in Meadowhall, which means trekking there and back (although I've only had to do this just the once) and having to sell to a different client base. It's always fun setting up stall and making the place look pretty but the selling aspect I always leave to Angga and Thomas.

Today I've been holed up in the Leadmill, watching over the Hantu stall where we were displaying a limited edition collection we've collaborated on with the council. The new shirts were officially unveiled today but you can have a sneak peek on the Hantu Collective website.

The design ideas were based around poking fun at the whole road safety aspect, as sometimes a serious message doesn't really work when it comes to selling clothes. Our younger designer, Aaran came up trumps and managed to design the staff event t-shirts for the day which I'm happy with him for.

Meanwhile I was also involved with curating the live art for the event alongside the Stars In Stripes our mural idea being recognisable birds associated with road crossings. It was pleasing to see people walk by and clicking with the idea, I suppose that's the beauty of illustration, it's all about being playful with the subject matter.

My New Favourite Music Video: Massive Attack - Atlas Air

I've been hooked on this new track from the recent Massive Attack album but the video is equally as impressive, the animation and the way it's executed it simply amazing. The rabbit is the main protaganist running through what seems to be a ravaged world with a lot of dark dystopian imagery and the monotony of airline travel. The video was directed by video and animation artist, Edouard Salier.

Another video for their track, Splitting The Atom uses the same guy for this video, following a frozen world pretty much the same one from Atlas Air but a panning camera captures everything in its frozen state. Bloody brilliant I say.

New Hantu Wolf Design

It's seems these days I have to find time to keep up with designs for Hantu Collective. Luckily when I do feel inspired and I get a day or two to myself I can throw something like this together, a design that crashes and bites. The mood I'm feeling for this month is quite frantic, so I'm taking inspiration from that and will create a little collection of fighting animals. The final version of the print will be on charcoal coloured t-shirts, I might have to save the white t-shirt colour way for something special.

Weston Park Museum

On Thursday 21st October Weston Park Museum hosted a special event in tribute to apples. I was asked alongside Lord Bunn to do some live art alongside cider tasting, apple juice pressing and a live skittle band. It was pretty neat walking around the museum before drawing, it brought back loads of memories from when I was a kid.

My own drawing comprised of apple related characters from stories such as Adam & Eve, Sir Issac Newton and William Tell.

Lord Bunn's piece took a more traditional approach with washes of paint and some nice brush calligraphy, naming all the types of apples.

Live Drawing For This Week...

This will be a busy week for me, especially as I have t-shirts to finish off for the new Hantu Collective range but also the two live drawing events ahead of me.

This Wednesday 20th October I have been asked by TOMS shoes to doodle at their Style Your Sole event for the relaunch of Office in Meadowhall. TOMS run on an ethical business model where they donate shoes to under priviledged children for every sale made, something quite unique and pleasing to see. The event will hold stalls where there's free Kopperberg cider, Krispy Kreems Donuts, Toni & Guy hair fixing and many other freebies as well as a DJ to keep the atmosphere lively. Starts at 5pm and finishes at 9pm, if you happen to pass by then pop in and wave hello!

This Thursday 21st October I will be drawing at Weston Park Museum for their Apple Day

event, to celebrate the International Day of The Apple. I will be drawing a big piece on canvas for a couple of hours, hopefully I should be able to finish in time. I'll be drawing alongside, good buddy, Lord Bunn who's also a dab hand with a brush as well as pen, it should be interesting to see what we both come up with. The event will host activities such as apple tasting, apple cider pressing amongst other things and it's free entry, this should be a fun night at the museum.

Rollerpalooza!

This little blog post is a bit out of the ordinary, I normally love to write about art and design related stuff but I just had to write about Rollerpalooza. On Friday 8th October, Sheffeld Roller Disco played host to a night of music, beers and roller skating, boasting a line up of some brilliant noise, punk and indie bands, namely No Age, Male Bonding, Pulled Apart By Horses and The Hey Sholay.

Sheffield needs more nights like these but seen as they don't come so often, it's a great treat. There was a pre bar at the Queens Road Social Club, where Drowned in Sound put the Dum Dum Girl's gig on and it's also a great quirky little joint thats like a flashback into the 70's. After that it was the Roller rink itself, the turn out was huge and there were many familiar faces there rolling around the rink, at one point it was chaos on the floor, people smashing into each other and dodging flailing limbs, even my housemates kept skating past me and nicking my beer. Oh before I forget to mention I did chicken out and leave behind the skates as I didn't want to risk breaking a wrist or just falling over like a complete ass, something that was bound to happen. My personal highlight of the night was watching the Hey Sholay and Male Bonding shock it out on stage whilst watching people decking it on their skates in and outside the rink, it sounded like pure chaos but to everyone else, just looked like sheer fun.

Certainly can't wait until the next one comes around and the line up itself will be one to watch out for.

Pecha Kucha 03

Pecha Kucha is an idea that came from Japan and has become a global organised event. It's origins lie in revolutionary format for presentations as two architects from Japan devised a way to lessen the boredom during lectures, they developed the 20x 20 format, 20 slides and an allocated time of 20 seconds each.

I was invited by Pecha Kucha in Sheffield to speak alongside other designers, entrepreneurs and even council member Paul Scriven.

Here's my presentation on the way Sheffield has grown around me and how I've come to adapt to it's vibrant art and music scene.

Live Decorating at the Wick At Both Ends

The Wick at Both Ends is a nice humble bar on Sheffield's busy West Street. The main guy, Frankie asked me to bring some art into the place by doodling on the walls, I brought in the Stars In Stripes to chip in some ink on the walls and after 4 hours of drawing the results looked brilliant. I've developed a penchant for drawing birds and wild life as of late, something I never used to draw as a kid, but drawing animals is pretty fun.

The more I draw with this group the more proud I become, everyone's work and style is growing and you can sense that we're all influencing the encouraging each other too.

We aim to push more work through the Stars In Stripes and hopefully get more wall mural work around the city, bars and clubs aren't too a start but eventually, who knows? Maybe an exhibition would be great and there's talk of working on bigger walls. Only time can tell with what our group can and will do but I'm always looking forward to seeing what happens.

Live Art For The Book Club: SOYO LIVE 2010

Last night, there was a buzz in Sheffield and in particular at Bar SOYO, a long time collaborator with me and Hantu Collective. They played host to an eclectic local line up of Sheffield's most up and coming bands, The Book Club, The Wet Nuns and the Pirouettes, all bands which were to attract a big crowd, a crowd so big they even opened up the room next door just to fit us live artists in there.

The Stars In Stripes were present at SOYO doodling away, which topped off the vibe of the night, it was one of music and art and the two have always gone hand in hand. The Book Club's drummer, Ant has been a friend of mine for a few years and we keep knocking into eachother out and about, he asked me to draw a banner for them to take away on their tour, I happily obliged. I went into SOYO 3 hours earlier and drew out the banner during sound check, probably one of my favourite times before the night gets mad. Finished the banner in 1hour and 30 mins, a personal best for me when the pressure's on.

Live Art In Sheffield

Live art in Sheffield has become a vibrant regular fixture in the city with loads of artists coming out of their work spaces and doodling in front of people in bars, gigs and clubs. I'm proud to be seeing something like this take off in Sheffield, especially as I feel that it has certainly come leaps and bounds from when I first started it at the Hantu Collective Sweet Dreams Fashion show in February 2009, after that, SOYO Live decided to use the Live drawing aspect on a

weekly basis as background visual noise for their night. Unquiet Desperations also took on the live art aspect for their folksy evening of art and music, allowing artists, illustrators and etc another outlet for their creativity. Then came the introduction of the Tramlines Festival, a festival for music held in the centre of Sheffield, this also allowed live art to be seen in venues such as The Bowery, The Washington Pub and SOYO yet again, with crowds milling around in between

the live bands and acts, live art was happening around them, and they would gather and watch and ask questions. Sometimes I used to ask questions, what was point in doodling in front of people, what would I get out of it, and was it worth doing, only over time have I realised that all the times I've done live drawing I have met many people and possibly encouraged others to get involved.

Live art has become a great means for artists to promote their work, although it's never a gurantee that an art director or someone of importance will happen to pass by, there's still a beneficial advantage of being an artist who is always in the public eye for their work. Styles become more noticable and concrete which lead the audiences and passers by to sub consciencely keep tabs on certain artists who are seen to be drawing often. I'd never go so f

ar to stake a claim that I'd been a catalyst for live art in Sheffield, but the timing with the atmosphere around me and the people who I worked with on Hantu, SOYO Live and other such things, live art has grown in Sheffield with our involvement and association, something that I'm pretty proud of, especially as I see the impact it has had on budding new artists.

As I noticed more artists were taking part in live art, I came up with an idea, that those artists could be gathered together to work under one name or as a team. There fore it would become a collective of artists that could throw work eachother's way. I came up with the Stars In Stripes, a group who do live art and commissioned work and the only rule was that each member had to wear stripes as they were drawing. This group are compiled of who I think are the most enthusiastic and creative illustrators I've met in Sheffield and their appetite to put ink to board

and wall has only boosted my own enthusiasm.

I hope the Stars In Stripes is something that can grow, with more members and more commisions under it's belt. We've already amassed quite a lot of work in and around Sheffield, from the Harley Pub and Northern General Hospital but a little more couldn't hurt. Watch this space.

Road Safey Project

For the past 2 weeks I've been working on a t-shirt design for Sheffield Council's Road Safety Campaign in collaboration with the Hantu Collective. The brief was simple as they wanted the designs to not have a hard line message but to look interesting and have more of an underlying message and poke a bit of fun at the theme. We decided that we would use reflective vinyls on the t-shirts so they would have functional use as well as a statement behind them.

Live Art at the Sheffield Cathedral

This is a late post as I'm seemingly pretty bad at keeping up to date on my blogging. Here are a few pictures from the Hantu Fashion show we hosted at the Sheffield Cathedral, an event which was the first of it's kind at the venue. I probably haven't been to quick on blogging about this as I'm still exhausted from organising the show, and trust me it was a lot of hard work! Thankfully we had an army of volunteers to help out with the music, bands, liasing with the artists and clothing labels, without them, it'd been nothing.

We also had a live art feature in the show where I had a band of illustrators draw against graffiti artists in a friendly contest where the crowd would vote at the end which piece they preferred. Unfortunately the illustrators didn't win but hey it was the taking part that counted... ha ha.

Don't Panic Panda

This took me around a week to finish off, with a lot of starting and stopping. My housemate, Mat runs the Sheffield division of Don't Panic, a quirky promotions group originally from London (you may have seen their envelopes with flyers and limited edition posters in them).

Mat's been pestering me over the year to draw a panda with a machine gun for him and so I folded. Here it is and I quite like it, even though this particular panda looks a bit vicious. I think he's going to have this as a t-shirt and he's the only one who will have the print. How selfish!

My Characters as... costumes!

So how do you think Walt Disney felt like when he first saw a 7ft Mickey Mouse costumed staff member walk around his first Disney Land park? Probably not as overwhelmed as I was when I saw my Speeka Peeps characters and cat doodle being made into costumes themselves.

They were created and designed by me and Ceri Rimmer who is also a kick ass seamstress who works on her own line of clothing, Cherry Head. We created the costumes for the Hantu Presents fashion show at Sheffield Cathedral, the characters would add a bit more fun to the catwalk and would be handing out flyers beforehand.

It was pretty neat seeing my own creations come to life... even if they were just friends wearing the costumes and acting daft!

I've become a very lazy blogger, especially with the amount of work that has come my way recently and the kerfuffle of not having internet access at the new house I was living in AND then having to move out of one property into another... but I shall vow to get straight back on to the blog stuff.

In case you didn't know I wanted to create a group for the live artists to work under so we can share contacts and opportunities and just have more banter between us. The idea then became the Stars In Stripes, a group that wear Stripes whilst live drawing, simple concept really, anyone can join as long as they wear their stripes!

Unfinished Monster Project...

I've posted this up early as it looked a finished piece, even though it's meant to be part of a bigger piece. I'm entering a competition called "Imaginary Beings" held by the Milkwood Gallery in Cardiff where the brief is to illustrate a beast of mythical context, with free reign over style. It's been a while since I've done anything truly fun and self initiated so I wanted to give this one a go.

The monster I'll be illustrating is the Chimera, the mythological beast from Greek folklore with a head of a lion, body of a goat and tail of a snake. Random as it is, a platypus probably would have been a better idea, but once I've started, I just have to finish...

I've been very keen to start and finish this piece, I've had it in my head for the past week and really wanted to find some time to nail it. It's a further exploration into using digital mixed media and hand drawn elements. The procrastinating has worked out fine this time round as I've pieced this image together in my head all week. The next step is being able to turn this into a decent t-shirt graphic. We'll see how that goes...

New Illustration & developing style

So this weekend in between hanging out in the sunshine and watching the football I've been playing around with drawing and water colours, I'm always kind of conscience about where my illustrative style heads towards as I've felt over the past year I've stamped my look.

But like a musician you never want to sit still and be pigeon holed into one thing so I like to have a play around. I've worked on these 2 pieces, "My Friend Yuriko" and "Gorilla in the Mist" over the weekend, mixing it up on my graphics tablet. They're more or less extensions of the previous piece "Tiger Splash" where I've used that as a t-shirt design for Hantu Collective, I've still yet to decide if the "Gorilla in The Mist" piece will make a suitable t-shirt print. My Friend Yuriko is just a little portrait piece I've been playing around with, she asked me a while back to draw her and I felt this was good timing to try something new.

Here's a new piece I've been working on over the past week, incidentally during the World Cup in South Africa, with that being on TV all week, the colours they've used in the graphic design, the adverts that are blaring out from the screen gave me some influence to put this design together. Tigers are pretty cool cats anyway and I always wanted to make a nice Tiger inspired t-shirt design, I think I've found it!

Robot Rampage

This is a new Hantu Collective t-shirt design I've been working on for days, it's been the first design I've gone back and forth with over a period of 3 days, as it took me a while to nail the look I wanted to achieve with a regularly used idea. I liked the thought of a giant robot causing destruction like in an American B-Movie. My poor iMac took the brunt of handling this heavy file but I'm happy with it, it's given me loads more ideas to work on now. I'll make this available to buy from The Hantu Collective website in the next month.

Child's Play Exhibition Pieces

These are my 3 individual pieces that I've submitted for my collaborated exhibition project alongside painter Jane Faram. Child's Play is a collaborated effort involving Sheffield's finest illustrators and artists who have been picked to come out from hiding and show piece their work to an open brief. I'd managed to rope in quite a few artists from Nick Deakin, Jonny Wan, Lord Bunn, Mute & Lee Bamforth. My pieces come from my wandering imagination, probably something I inherited from a young age, I was given pencils and paper as a means of keeping me occupied as my parents would buy me toys but would get bored of them quickly. The 3 images I've submitted more or less highlight the power of a child's imagination and how raw and at times destructive it can be; ever built a tower out of blocks and then felt inclined to smash it down?

The exhibition is from the 6th of June and running until 4th July in the Forum Bar in Sheffield.

Hair Kandi Wall Murals

There's a relatively new Hair Salon in Sheffield by the name of Hair Kandi, well it used to be on Ecclesall Road but now has moved to the city centre of West Street. The owner's Dave and Sara commissioned me to draw pieces on 2 separate walls, the main reception area and the hair wash area where they play films on projector and use a wall as the screen. The Projector wall area was very fun to do and as they gave me free reign I was able to mull over some ideas for a week and just get down to drawing.

The second piece was intended to be drawn live during their launch party, which to me was a scary prospect, what if I fell down from my perch, or smudged so badly I couldn't disguise it... luckily I didn't fall or fail and managed to produce one of the most proudest pieces I've ever come up with. It was more or less a re drawn portrait of my friend Alex Godwin and again one of my favourite pieces.

Finally been able to update the new look and format of the Hantu Collective website. I suppose we were happy with it being an online shop for a while, but I suddenly realised that people didn't really know us for the stuff outside of selling and designing our clothes. In Hantu Collective we've got more members all doing their own thing but still helping out the label itself so we've opted for a more blog feel to the site. It will feel a lot more personal and hopefully people who click it will dig the little write ups we post up there.

Kelham Riverside Mural

Here are some pics from my week long project that was at Kelham Riverside down at Kelham Island. An area once known for its industrial quarter and mostly known now for its award winning brewed ales! The area itself has been looking at regeneration with new flats and offices being built for young professionals and creatives to occupy the space.

Ledgard Jepson brought me on board again to design a mural and draw/ paint it onto a wall covering 48 square meters. Pretty big and it required a bit of scaffold climbing. Admittedly, I had to direct my style more towards a general look and feel to it but managed to keep some degree of my style within the piece. Either way it was a lot of fun, can't wait to see what the office actually looks like when it's finished.

An Old Favourite Piece

I've reworked a favourite piece of mine from last years Tramlines festival in Sheffield. The girl is referenced from one of my old friends from university, another illustrator Alex Godwin (www.alexgodwin.co.uk). It's a cool piece as this was a moment when I discovered a new palette of colours to work with, pastel colours. It was a fun July period having Alex come down and take part in some live drawing during Tramlines. I can't wait for this years, hopefully it'll be better than the last.

JDA Office Walls

It's been weeks since I'd completed the wall mural work at JDA but I've been so behind on updating the blog. JDA Marketing are based in the Shipley area of Leeds and can boast big clients such as Halifax in their portfolio. I was asked to come in and draw a mural on their main office and also dot some characters and illustrations in their recreational room. I had a lot of fun doing this, especially hiding illustrations on corners and above plug sockets etc.

Alice in Wonderland

I was asked by a friend to design a t-shirt based on Alice in Wonderland. I was a tad reluctant at first as it seems to be all the rage again with the new Tim Burton film out. But I thought it'd be nice for me to put my own spin on the characters, truth me told I'd never read the story and I'd only watched the Disney version of the animation when I was a kid but I still remembered who the characters were.

I enjoyed making this image and the whole 2 colour print idea came out of no-where, never would I ever think of using brown and yellow together on any other piece but it seemed to suit this time.

This piece was based around the whole idea of building and putting together ideas, so the idea of little robots constructing a giant robot came about, again I really enjoyed putting together little scenes and hidden gems within this piece.

This Is Chemistry Wall Mural

The past week I've been in Bradford for 2 days drawing on the walls of This Is Chemistry, a PR and Design agency with a beautiful studio space and wonderful friendly staff.

The idea behind the illustrations on the walls are based around process and robots as fun decor for clients and staff to enjoy, I've certainly enjoyed doodling away for them even though I've mashed up most of my sharpies pen collection. Oh well. I've never drawn such intricate scenes before on such big spaces but it is a lot of fun and offers me room to add in hidden extras and easter eggs for people to spot.

I still have another 2 days to complete the job with one more wall illustration to start and to add spots of colour to rest of them. Can't wait to see how it all turns out!

Tinsley Towers Illustration

If you are a Yorkshire person or hail from Sheffield you'd know that last year was the historic event of the Tinsley Towers being demolished.

An upcoming Arts & Newspaper project in Sheffield asked me to provide an illustration based around a "new change / fresh start" concept. I felt that the coming down of the towers might be interesting as people were powerless to stop its destruction but it posed a fresh start for the new decade. Maybe a hint of things to come? You never know.

Most of my best work has come from sketches I've forgotton about in random pages of my books. I guess it can take time for basic ideas to really mature into something usable in the future. I also assume people who hoarde things wait for the day they can use their hoardings. Very understandable really.

I've been approached by design and promotion agency, This Is Chemistry to produce a series of wall art for their offices, covering the studio, accounts and meeting room. The brief was simple they've asked for my own ideas based around the theme of robots and something that is a bit epic and lovely to look at in the background as they work away. Hand Of Man

Fellow illustrator Sam Brewster has been busy this year with his editorial commissions and his self publication which some of us have contributed towards. The first zine in the Hand of Man series is aptly named, "Nature" to which all of the illustrations submitted have been based around organic and natural forms.

Other illustrators such as Lee Bamforth and Jake Binns are amongst the creatives who have work in the zine. Keep a look out for it around Sheffield on counters and if you're lucky enough, maybe a mail out!

So I've been struck down this weekend with some bug or whatever you want to call it. And being bed ridden isn't fun, especially when I'm used to be doing things all the time. But I guess I've been able to stay productive all thanks to having a laptop.

The website has been updated after hours of squinting at my dim screen but I finally got there. All from the comfort ( and discomfort ) of my bed.

Some good news though, as fellow graphic designer Chris Smith rung me up today to ask if I would be available to illustrate for Plug nightclub posters once a month as of next year.

Having work around the corner is always good.

I'd been asked by Dan Mager of Phuture Motion to produce some artwork for their upcoming debut album. This is my first Music packaging job so I kind of jumped at the chance. Phuture Motion have a latin beat sound to them but with a lot breakbeats much to the sounds of many Ninja tunes artists and so forth. After hearing their stuff I thought my style would definetly suit their sound and so hopefully next year we'll be seeing/ hearing the first presses! here's a couple of screen shots as to how it looks so far.

I've recently discovered that for a year, my Don't Panic Poster Design has been selling great.... in Thailand... without my permission or knowledge, it took a clever facebook photo tag to discover this violation of my work and I'm annoyed. I'd track down the fools but... its Thailand, it'd take some great detective work ( and maybe a grant from Channel 4 and documentary crew to film the whole thing ) for anything to happen.

Yet I feel strangely flattered at the same time. Weird.

Heres one of the images from my recent collaborative exhibition with Jane Faram. " Do Your Best/ Do Your Worst" was pretty fun, it was the simple case of sending eachother half completed collages for the other to finish off. This one is the title piece of the collection, theres 11 in total and currently on show in The Forum, in Sheffield. Have a peep if you fancy. Hopefully I'll get some kind of online gallery working with that, just can't seem to find the time these days, no surprise there...

Like what seems to be the rest of the world, I'd joined Twitter... not really understanding what its about, or maybe I don't see the inner genius of it all. As far as I know you just leave statuses on it, and people can read them. Much like a facebook account but this one is just for statuses.

I'm currently following Stephen Fry but I guess I'm too much of a small fry for him to take notice of me... *sniff*

I've known this geezer for quite some years and I'm happy to see he's back in Sheffield so I can meet him for coffees again. Nice.

Click here and look at his illustration work, he's had clients I could only dream of having and he's on a different playing level. Brilliant character illustrations with nice colour palettes, vectored to a sharp quality. His typography work ain't too bad either.

Welcome To The Arcade

Unless you don't already know I'm currently residing within Arcade, a new shop on Devonshire Street. We've been opened since July and seeing things picking up recently with the students back.

I've been involved with looking after The Hantu Collective label and printing workshop in the back room and it's been fun (and a little hectic). Me and other artist Jay and Asmahan have also put our personal touch into the shop and painted the walls, drawing big has never been more fun really.

Next time you take a trip to the Forum then you'll be able to spot us opposite Ark. Come by and admire the art, clothes and homeware we have in store.
